What the official synopsis says

iQIYI and Baidu Baike carry the same official synopsis. In our own words:

  1. Yun Li is so shy that talking to strangers is an ordeal. To prove to her father she can live on her own, she enrolls in a graduate program in Nanwu.
  2. Just before term starts, a local VR experience hall invites her, as a video creator, to try out its games. There she runs into Fu Shize, the genius boy whose photo she kept above her bed in high school.
  3. With help from the people around them, she stops hiding her crush and openly pursues him. She wins him over.
  4. Dating is sweet, but they handle problems differently. A string of misunderstandings blows up, they break up, and Yun Li goes abroad. The painful past Fu Shize kept buried comes out.
  5. To win her back, Fu Shize pulls himself together and leads his team to a research breakthrough. When she returns, he courts her in earnest, and they clear the air and get back together.

Why do Yun Li and Fu Shize break up?

Fu Shize's official character profile says the breakup is set off by the shadow of his close friend's death. In the novel that friend is Jiang Yuan (江渊), and his death is why Fu Shize, a top physics student at Nanwu University, dropped out for a while. The novel's character entry says the couple split over his unresolved grief and both of them being immature, then grew up apart. Xie Bin Bin (谢彬彬) plays Jiang Yuan in a special appearance, so expect the friendship to be shown in flashbacks.

Content note: in the novel, Jiang Yuan's death is a suicide. If that's a hard subject for you, the drama's heavy stretch is likely to be the middle third.

How the novel ends

Zhu Yi's novel ends the same way for the couple. The chapter titles of the second print volume (完结篇) run from the breakup (“Is there still a chance?”) through his low point (“The withered boy”) to an engagement (“We can get engaged first”) and the closing “Rain can be a good day too”. Its extra stories show them as parents of a little boy, hanging out with the couples from Hidden Love and The First Frost. Whether the drama keeps the engagement or the child is not confirmed.
