The Lament of Autumn episode 36 recap: A boat that never arrives

What happens in episode 36

At the field hospital, Ye Pingjun nurses wounded soldiers who ask how long Chinese will keep fighting Chinese, and she writes about it. Deputy Minister Jun offers to press the central army to cut off supplies to the Chu–Mou alliance, on one condition: the Yu and Jun families must be joined by marriage.

Ye Pingjun finds she is pregnant. Yu Changxuan says she and the baby are his weak spot and sends her back to Nanhuai, promising to be a better father than he was a husband. She is grabbed as soon as she boards. Gu Ruitong brings word that the boat blew up with no survivors, and Yu Changxuan coughs up blood and collapses.

Zhao Baoru breaks the news at home. Yu Zhongquan orders a grave for Ye Pingjun and the baby at the West Suburb cemetery, knowing his own hands are bloody: since he accepted the Jun family's terms, there has been no way back.

Ye Pingjun is alive, locked up by Jiang Xueting, who says he can't do without her. When she tells him the baby is Yu Changxuan's, he wants it gone. She holds a hairpin to her own throat and swears to die if he harms Yu Changxuan or the child, and he gives in, as long as she stays put.

Jin Zhongfang shows Yu Changxuan her war reports, all calling for an end to the civil war, and tells him to live to see the future she wrote about. Yu Changxuan goes back to the front. Out of ammunition and cut off by the central army, Chu Wenfu walks toward the Yu lines to shoot himself and is gunned down first. Tao Ziyi visits Ye Pingjun and refuses to help: she wants her to live in misery.

Why it matters

The years apart in the official synopsis begin with a lie: Yu Changxuan mourns a wife who is alive, and his own father helped make it happen.
