The Lament of Autumn ending explained

Short answer: the drama is set up to end more hopefully than the novel

The drama's official synopsis says Yu Changxuan and Ye Pingjun split after her mother's death, then reunite years later in wartime and fight side by side. Ling Xi's novel ends tragically: they never truly reunite and Ye Pingjun dies alone. The final episodes haven't aired, so details are not confirmed yet.

What the official synopsis says

In our own words, the synopsis on Baidu Baike runs like this:

  1. In the warlord era, Ye Pingjun is caught up in an attempt on Yu Changxuan's life and bets she can find the culprit in ten days.
  2. He courts her as cover for his military plans and falls for her for real.
  3. After Jiang Xueting comes home and Tao Ziyi gets involved, the two are forced to marry.
  4. Her mother's violent death drives them apart, and each goes their own way to save the country.
  5. Years later, in the middle of the war, they meet again, see the strength of conviction in each other, and fight side by side to defend their home.

The lead summary on the same page adds that they are bound as a contract couple and go through amnesia before the reunion. Baidu Baike: synopsis, cast, crew and release rules

Where the story is now

Is it a happy ending?

On the evidence so far, it leans hopeful: a reunion and a shared cause rather than the novel's death. Whether they end the series as a couple, and whether anyone close to them dies in the war, is not confirmed. We'll update this page as the last episodes air.

How the novel ends

Baidu Baike's entry on the book describes a much darker ending. Ye Pingjun finally escapes Yu Changxuan's control and struggles to survive, worn down by years of strain. Once, they pass each other by chance: he doesn't recognize the frail woman as the Ye Pingjun he has been searching for, and they lose their only chance to meet again. Her illness worsens and she dies alone, while Yu Changxuan marries and has children. The entry also says Jiang Xueting turns bitter and dark, and Tao Ziyi is pushed into a political marriage with him. Baidu Baike: the novel 玉簟秋

Ling Xi, the novelist, also co-wrote the screenplay, so the changed direction is the author's own. More on the book: the novel. Baidu Baike: synopsis, cast, crew and release rules Baidu Baike: the novel 玉簟秋
