What happens in episode 33

Jiang Xueting lures Ye Pingjun to her old home, claiming news of Yu Changxuan. He begs her to leave with him. She says Yu Changxuan stood by her after she was hurt, that he is the only one she loves, and that she will stay with him whatever happens. As she walks away, Jiang Xueting punches a tree until his hand bleeds.

In court, Jiang Xueting accuses Yu Changxuan of killing the envoy. Yu Changxuan produces a signed agreement letting him keep the arsenal, then calls a surprise witness: Gao Ping himself. Yu Changxuan had seen through the plot, protected him and let him watch his own car blow up. The false witness insists he acted alone and shoots himself outside; Jiang Xueting had taken his wife and son to keep him quiet.

The southern government asks Yu Changxuan to join it in unifying China, and he hesitates, afraid of dragging Nanhuai into war. A Japanese man, Takahashi, offers the Yu family a partnership. Yu Zhongquan politely refuses, and Yu Changxuan says they will take no Japanese help at all.

Ye Pingjun learns she is pregnant. On the way home, a building on fire makes her driver brake hard and she hits her head. The flames bring back her mother's last moments: the button, and the words that soldiers set the fire. She tells her maid Xiaotang to keep the pregnancy secret.

That night she holds scissors to Yu Changxuan's throat as he sleeps, remembers every time he saved her, and stops. In the morning she sees him off as usual, then visits her old home and weeps. Meanwhile Mou Linsen plans to go over to the southern government and introduces Takahashi to Jiang Xueting. Xiaotang runs back in tears to say Ye Pingjun has vanished and tells Yu Changxuan everything. In her room he finds a note saying their bond is over and she knows how her mother died, weighed down by the wedding rings and the button.
