The Lament of Autumn episode 19 recap: An umbrella and fifty strokes
Yu Changxuan rescues Ye Pingjun from the Japanese concession, breaks up with Tao Ziyi, and is branded a traitor after dining with a Japanese officer.
What happens in episode 19
Ye Pingjun comes to thank him and is turned away. He follows her anyway and has someone bring her an umbrella.
She leads a boycott of Japanese goods and is taken into the Japanese concession and tortured. The Yu army stages a "military exercise" outside the Japanese chamber of commerce, and Yu Changxuan carries her out himself.
He ends things with Tao Ziyi, who slaps him.
He dines with a man calling himself Fujiwara, really the Japanese officer Fujita Ichiro. Photos run in the papers and he is called a traitor, though the painting he gives in return, of the Honnō-ji incident, is a quiet insult. His father orders fifty strokes.
Why it matters
The traitor story sets up the court-martial in episode 20 and the twist about who leaked it.
