In short

What happens in episode 2

Yan Shang spends all his money learning to make rouge and manages to recreate the shade the princess's late mother used. His father scolds him for fawning over royalty.

Magistrate Zheng arrives looking for the princess and insults Yan Shang's father, Yan Zhanzhi. From the exchange the princess learns the old man was once a celebrated scholar.

Convinced that Yan Shang brought the officials to her door, she throws his rouge into a water jar and leaves.

On the road a tiger's roar spooks the horses, the carriage plunges off a cliff, and she falls into a river. Yan Shang goes searching alone and catches her as she slips, right at the edge of a wolf pack.

Why it matters

The rouge becomes the first token between them, and the rescue flips who owes whom.
