What happens in episode 14

Liu Wenji writes to his father asking to marry Chunhua. That same night Chunhua wakes in her family's house next to a snoring Prince Jin, her clothes in disarray. Her mother, brother and sister-in-law tell her it's a stroke of fortune. She runs back to the princess's residence, and the princess keeps her in her own room and tells her not to punish herself for someone else's crime. Chunhua refuses to see Liu Wenji, who waits at the gate all day.

The princess sends word that she will come to Chunhua's house the next day to "arrange a match" for Prince Jin. She leaves with a sword, and Yan Shang goes with her. She kicks the door in, stabs the prince, then drives the blade between his legs, stopping short this time. She tells the family they are cut off from Chunhua for good, and steers the terrified prince into blaming his wound on Chunhua's brother and sister-in-law.

Outside, Zheng Xing, a favorite of Yu Cheng'an, is driving villagers off their land to build a hunting ground. Prince Jin runs out, takes an arrow, and shouts who he is. Zheng decides to kill him and hide the body. Watching from the window, the princess raises a crossbow and shoots Zheng dead.

Zheng's men surround the house. Yan Shang takes the bow from her and walks out, announcing that he killed Zheng Xing to rid the people of a tyrant. The princess says she will escort him to the capital for trial. All along the road he calls out what he did, and the crowds cheer him.

He is beaten bloody at the Silver Terrace Gate office run by Yu Cheng'an's men. Prince Jin is too scared to help, so the princess begs the Emperor, who writes a pardon. Over a game of chess, Chancellor Liu tells the Emperor the pardon will only get Yan Shang killed faster. Under torture, Yan Shang asks to see Yu Cheng'an, and Yu Cheng'an arrives.

Why it matters

Yan Shang takes a killing on himself a second time to protect the princess, and Chunhua's assault sets her on the path her profile describes.
